Good Public Access Places for Shorebirds

I asked the question “Has anyone compiled a list of fish farms where it is okay to bird?”  Someone said that it was a great idea and I should get started.  So, here goes.  As far as I know, all AGFC fish hatcheries are open to the public so I’m including some of them.

Okay to Bird

Treadway Minnow Farm, north of Carlisle.

Saul’s Fish Farm, north of Hazen.

Joe Hogan Fish Hatchery, southwest of Lonoke.

C. B. “Charlie” Craig State Fish Hatchery, aka Centerton, west of Bentonville.

Andrew H. Hulsey State Fish Hatchery, south of Hot Springs.

Bald Knob NWR, southeast of Bald Knob.

Not Sure About

Anderson Minnow Farm near Lonoke used to be “the” place but something happened and they may no longer allow birders on site.  I don’t know what happened but I asked permission two summers ago and was turned down.  Then in late July, 2009 it appeared that birding was allowed again.  At this writing,  I don’t know what the status is.
